Cold Hands pg6

Over the holidays, when I had started making this comic, I was doing a lot of baking. It was a nightmare when I was in the middle of a cookie recipe and realized I had, previously, used up all of my vanilla extract. Hands over my head in exasperation, I panicked for one second and then ran out of my house, not properly dressed. Snow was on the ground and I was in socks and my peep toe flats. No scarf. No gloves. Though considering I was running around, that actually kept me just warm enough.

I'm still doing a lot of baking and cooking. Thanks, in part, to the great gift my older sister gave me: The Unofficial Harry Potter Cookbook. Man, is there a ton of pie recipes in that book. Some of the meals I've made haven't been too good. Here are some of my favorite recipes:

Cheesy Chivy Scrambled Eggs
English Farmhouse Scrambled Eggs and Bacon
Custard Tart
Rice Pudding
Homemade Fudge
Beef and "Guinness" Stew for Kids (I didn't have any actual Guinness on hand to make the real thing, so the kid's version used soda instead)
Kreacher's French Onion Soup.

Making my own desserts from scratch has really opened my eyes to just how much sugar goes in to this stuff. I wanted to test out a lot of the recipes in the book right away, but now that I've made a majority of them, I'm content to wait a good while (maybe even months) before I make them again.

Visiting from the etsy blog team! :) I had a comic about twelve years ago -- finding your blog brought back so many great memories for me! And, I am interested in finding this Harry Potter cookbook -- thanks!

I agree! When you bake all of your own stuff, you really realize what goes into everything. Icing is especially terrible. It's all butter or shortening. Blat.

I didn't even realize there WAS a Harry Potter cookbook!

Make your own vanilla-so easy and you'll never get caught short again!

i know what you mean about desserts... I made cheesecake for my boyfriend as a treat and haven't made it since! It was so sugary and so full of cheese and butter. I need to find a more healthy version, for sure!

I have the cookbook, A Wizard in the Kitchen by Abby Hupp. My daughter bought it for me at one of the Harry Potter conventions, and had the author autograph it to me. I'll have to look for The Unofficial Harry Potter Cookbook.
Happy cooking and baking to you :)

Thanks everyone, for the lovely comments. The Etsy Blog Team rocks ^^

There is such a thing as too much sugar. I can't believe when I was a kid, I used to eat a spoonful here and there of nothing but refined sugar. Gives me chills, now, thinking about it.
